The cs and the us are so strongly connected on the neurological level that the cs by itself now elicits the ur. Light:food salivation (ns: us ur) The light activates one area of the brain, the food activates another. When the two stimuli are presented in close contiguity, the stimulus that doesn"t have anything to do with the response comes to elicit it. Don"t treat the light as if it is food rather than a sign that food is about to come, some dogs would lick the light. Light: food eating peck (pigeon example) It"s as though the cs is being treated the same as the us. Tone: shock fear (ns: us ur) The fear responses are different: receive a shock jumping fear; hear the tone freeze fear. The freezing fear prepares the body to jump in response to the shock: preparatory response theory.
