PSYC-281 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Fixed Action Pattern, Russ Powell, Classical Conditioning
Document Summary
Chapter 3: reflex relatively simple, automatic response to a stimulus, fixed action pattern fixed sequence of responses elicited by a specific stimulus. Sign stimulus/releaser specific stimulus that elicits a fixed action pattern. For ex. red belly of male stickleback elicits a head-down, attack behaviour in other male stickleback. Same response can be elicited by artificial models or objects that contain the sigh stimulus of red, a red coloured card: habituation decreased in strength of an elicited behavior following repeated presentations of the eliciting stimulus. Sensitization increase in the strength of an elicited behavior following repeated presentations of the eliciting stimulus. High-intensity stimulus results in sensitization whereas low-intensity stimulus results in habituation. Moderate intensity stimulus often results in an initial period of sensitization followed by habituation: long-term habituation response slowly decreases as a result if repeated stimulation and ability to respond slowly recovers in the absence of stimulation.
