PSYC-307 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Sarcoma, Oncogene, Palliative Care
Document Summary
Cancers: treatment, survival, and quality of life; the impact on others. Cancers are uncontrollable, abnormal cell divisions: cells naturally have some mutations, but the buildup of abnormal cells can be pre-cancerous. Older age and the subsequent decrease in immunity predict higher cancer risk. Can be caused by carcinogens over time: ex asbestos. Cells activate oncogenes: inhibit tumour suppressing genes (theperson becomes more vulnerable to tumour formation) Timelines and slow development makes inferring causation difficult; more than 200 types: carcinoma: cancers to linings of organs and such (ex stomach, lung, etc, sarcoma: condition of connective tissue: bones, muscles, lymphoma, leukemia: blood cancers. Causes of cancer in adults: multiple causes and factors. Risk factors such as poor nutrition, sendentary lifestyle, age. Endocrine factors: high estrogen linked to some breast cancers. People may believe in certain causes and thus blame self or others. A person may be symptomatic or asymptomatic (will affect acceptance) Treatment: remissions and long term survival, cured depends on cancer.
