Tendency to only look for information that confirms idea being tested. What are the four steps to detecting covariation: information gathering, assigning cases, recalling cases / estimating frequency, combining evidence. No because confirmation bias may take over us. Describe the tennis player study (this is discussed in the gilovich and ross book) People only seek information to confirm the idea they are testing. Find # of cases that confirms their beliefs (don"t consider their number of losses as much but rather focus on their number of wins in a match) In the below figure, circle all cells that people should use to test this hypothesis. Put a star on those people typically use when answering questions. We always use confirmation bias, we are bad at covariation detection. Testing a hypothesis by only seeking cases that match it. It is motivated they want to confirm their beliefs & be right.
