Gendering one area affects the gendering of the other areas. Despite many changes : a sexual division of labour remains essentially unchanged within the family. Parson : gender differentiation is functional for families : assumed to be natural divisions. Males : instrumental tasks : role of technical experts and executive. Females : expressive tasks : role of expressive leader. Engels : transition to capitalism takes advantage of existing patriarchies. Subordination will end when women are employed. Conflict within families in the form of gendered intimate violence. Marxist: capitalism and private property subordinate women. Germaine greer: celebrate gender difference, with a focus on liberation (instead of equality) Critique of concept of transgendered for reproducing dualisms of gender. Goffman : gender displays reproduce gender differentiation. Codes of gender: that maintain male dominance/independence and female passivity/subordination. A cohesive gender identity is not possible in a postmodern society. Gender performances are sometimes contradictory and constantly changing.
