Social control, deviance, and crime (a,b,c,d,e: social control : We all participate in social control, which is directed at unacceptable ( deviant) acts. Retroactive or preventative (we manage ppl behaviors to try and prevent something) Directed at others or directed at ourselves. Acts become deviant when it is defined as such. No act wrong or right determined by social circumstances. Something is deviant if enough important people say so . High consensus vs low consensus deviance: crime. Criminal behavior is specific form of deviance. Deviance specialists study non-criminal forms of deviance. Crime is studied by criminologists (who, when, how often) Criminal law is part of public law. Intended to apply equally to all in practice is not always neutral. Media : violent crime out of control. Reality : most crimes are property crimes, crimes have declined since 1991. Conventional : what most people think as crime. White collar crime (misappropriation of financial resources)
