Framework of social patterns: i) ii) iii) Ascribed statuses are imposed upon us: son, brother, widow. Through personal actions we enter achieved statuses: student, doctor. Our most important status is a master status: race, sex. Role conflict : want to go out but also need to study. Role strain: under pressure to study for 2 exams: social groups. Social group: two or more people who share relevant cultural elements and interact with regular frequency. Social network links social groups together: social institutions. Relatively permanent societal structures that govern the behavior of groups and promote social order. Highly structured institutions are formal organizations bureaucracy : Max weber"s ideal type of bureaucracy : The process by which the principles of the fast food restaurants are coming to dominate more and more sectors of american society as well as the rest of the world. We now organize lives around bureaucratic ideas.
