SOCI-102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: White Supremacy, Eurocentrism, Confirmation Bias
Document Summary
Race is not real, in terms of being an actual thing; yet it has real effects. Not legitimated by science, yet us acting as if its real makes it a social force. Classification systems have altered with time and thus the construction of race has varied with time. The way we produce race as a category is contingent on cultural context (what counts as important biological differences) 1700"s scientifically justified: the rise of the authority of science. Aims to explain differences between humans on the basis of science versus supernatural forces or the will of god. Historical legacy of colonialism is important: continue to live with this today. Race as a term is an attempt to make categories of people; but there are always people who don"t fit any particular category. Tend to be the indigenous people, or mixed blood individuals.
