Chapter 1: models of youth justice systems (on test, 6 different models, extreme conservative (far right): crime control model, the priority is to maintain due process, go by the book, lots of technicalities. Offenders have less rights, they give up some of their rights because of their behaviour: example: can be sentenced to 10 life terms in the u. s. (which doesn"t make sense), and is really harsh. There is no rehabilitation: example: there is a arizona warden who makes prisoners wear pink. They live in tents, not a building so it is a free for all : justice model, protection of society, but also protects the rights of the accused. Minor offences are dealt with more leniently: this model was our old legislation. They take a closer look at the individuals" situation: welfare model, getting closer to the left hand side (liberal, emphasis is on the needs of the client and the best interests of the child.
