Has 5 stages: establishing a safe environment. Finding a space where everyone feels safe and comfortable. Community agency spaces of specific buildings: preparation. What the victim expects to get out of the process and what they want. Facilitators will almost rehearse with both parties as to what they will say. Mediation will usually start with writing letters to each other first or video exchange. Finally sitting down face-to-face comes after lots of preparation. If you miss the stage of preparation, things can go badly. Rj seems to be more effective with violent crimes: voluntary participation. Offender is asked if they"d want to choose rj or retributive and have their charges. Might be pressure for the victim to choose rj if they personally know their offender and might be getting pressured by others to choose it. This feature is taken for granted: face-to-face encounter.
