Cyclins need to be degraded to reset the timer and allow the next cell cycle to start. Walther flemming studied salamanders because of their large genome & drew the mitosis process with mitotic spindle by hand. As a result, the chromosomes are easily seen during the segregation process. Need to push the centrosomes apart to opposite poles of the cell. Spindle needs to be put in the right place (i. e. the middle). The mitotic spindle can end up anywhere & if positioned anywhere but the middle, the cell daughter cell will be asymmetric to the mother cell. Kinesins and dyneins are the engines of mitosis. Kinesin-5s are homo tetrameric kinesins that slide anti-parallel microtubules. Plus ends are on opposing sides, so the motor domains walks toward one end on the top while the bottom motor domains walk toward the opposite end. This causes a sliding apart motion between the anti-parallel microtubules.
