One of the things that make song birds special is that they"re not born with song they have to learn in through other birds. High similarities in syllables between father & pupil. Baby birds can also be isolated and raised without a father produce isolate song that"s completely different; even though genetically similar, the song produced is completely different. Songs from isolates are not attractive to females. It"s evolutionarily important for birds to learn the songs in order to reproduce. Sensitive period is important period of development for song learning. E. g. song development trajectory of juvenile bengalese finch. Visual representation of the song; the letters correspond to particular syllables. 40-50 days: not much structure, really soft with lots of noise. 90 days: nearly identical to father"s song; the motifs are the same (e. g. abcd, dghdgg, etc. )
