Identifying goals; keeping a main goal in mind while working toward sub-goals: understanding context; the rules necessary to achieve goals, capable of setting abstract goals (saving for retirement, getting an a in class, etc. ) Prefrontal cortex is the principle locus of executive function. The cortex that is anterior to brodmann"s areas 4 and 6. Dorsal-lateral regions of prefrontal cortex are interconnected with premotor and sensory association cortex. Interacts with regions of the brain involved in higher-order functions: ventral-medial regions are more involved in. hot executive function: e. g. regulating social behaviour, especially involved in connecting cognition and emotion, physiological state associated with emotional and cognitive states. The stroop test and the go-no-go tests are among the tests used to assess cognitive control in the lab. The stroop test: miller and cohen model of prefrontal cortex and cognitive control. In the absence of top-down control from prefrontal cortex, different output pathways compete for expression in response to the stimulus.
