1- a & a fibers enter dorsal column of spinal cord *white matter. 2- a & a axons turn up & travel to brainstem on ipsilateral/same side. Make 1st synapse in brainstem in dorsal column nuclei [2] Cross at brainstem & make 2nd synapse in thalamus in vpl & vpm nuclei. *contralateral side of a & a fibers [crossing = medial lemniscus] Medial lemniscus=ascending bundle of heavily myelinated axons crossing at brainstem thalamus. *axons projecting from brainstem to thalamus *already contralateral: pai(cid:374)/te(cid:373)p . 1- a & c fibers enter dorsal horn of spinal cord *grey matter. 2- a & c axons make synapse directly in spinal cord. Make 1st synapse in spinal cord in dorsal horn. Cross from dorsal horn [grey matter] to antero-lateral column [white matter] Make 3rd synapse in cerebral cortex in primary somatosensory cortex. 3- pain branch at brainstem = *side projections for arousal/ attention to pain.
