Turner: symbols represented aspects of tribe"s life, i. e. puberty tree ritual (liminality). White substance comes out of tree when tree is cut a specific way matrilineality, joining lineage of women. Also represents youth of the girl (young tree). The symbol has a different meaning depending on who you are in society. Geertz: model for and model of culture and religion as a subset of culture.
