Geertz has answer to question "why do bad things happen to good people" Religious concepts, give or leave earth much beyond events or occurrences. Reason for bad act is a specific act of witchcraft. Religion instruct people on how to act in the world. Witchcraft not explanation of why it happened, but instructs how to response to bad occurrences = rituals for resolution. Symbol is object, act, event, quality that stand in relation to judgement etc. Example: granary falling = witchcraft = consult witchdoctor. Unlike durkheim, geertz interested in how religion produces meaning.
