ATOC 184 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Manganese Nodule, Authigenesis, Saint Lawrence River
Document Summary
H. m. s challenger expedition laid foundation of modern oceanography. They drew the first map of composition of the seafloor. Sediment samples today are taken with piston core samplers and box core samplers. Principle of stratification: deeper in the core, the older the sediment. Used to study past climate, or how the climate has changed. Remote sensing is also done using reflection seismology and multibeam echosounders (mbes) Reflection seismology (artificial earthquakes) used to find subsurface properties such as where oil reserves are. Biogenic sediments: produced from life: diatom ooze, calcareous ooze, radiolarian. Gravel, sand, silt, clay, ash and volcanic sand/gravel ooze, sponge spicules. Plankton: any living organism living in a large body of water that cannot swim. Any chemical reaction can go both ways. Is the saturation state of seawater with respect to calcium carbonates. = 1 seawater is in equilibrium with respect to caco 3. Omega is controlled by temperature, acidity and pressure.
