Goodbye South, Goodbye
Made during post-martial law Taiwanese cinema.
Opening scene:
• A common theme seen threw out the film are long scenes where characters
are just sitting around; symbolism for the slow pace of life of the Taiwanese
at the time.
• The shot of the Taiwanese landscape and nature; transcending from the
characters themselves in the train to the bigger picture showing the
insignificance of their lives compared to the rest of the world.
About 37 minutes into the film, there are long awkward shots of just driving that
are in the color green. The color green brings back that feeling of going into the
past, but since it's also a secondary color, it represents future and progression.
About 55 minutes into the film, we have a scene in orange wash - we get a
mixture of cultures that makes the scene confusing and shaky, it asks the question
of "what are they doing here, what is being accomplished?"
Lecture:
Easy Rider - 1969
The opening scene of the movie shows us that the film is about thematizing
America by glamourizing the open road, the film ends however in a shocking way.
Like Goodbye South Goodbye, they go on a pointless road trip and engage in
vaguely grimy stuff such as drugs an all. By the end, the utter pointlessness of the
road as a destination becomes to feel like a trap.
Goodbye South Goodbye has a similar trajectory of beginning in motion and
ending with a car going of the rail and we don't know why.
Pigs and Battleships - 1961
*The scene where the pigs get loose and take over the military town* - The movie
goes from being a small-time gangster film to be a horror movie about pigs. The
