Victor coleman was a canadian poet and publisher. Boom in production b/c canada council giving out grants to artists. Many publishing companies are established as a result of this. Some are very nationalistic and devoted to canadian writers. Hot lead printing process being used at this time. Victor coleman was one of the founders of coach house press. Coleman publishing a lot of new, experimental writing. Ondaatje was inspired by coleman"s experimental writing. This is a poem which is, in way, paying tribute to coach house press. Among all of ondaatje"s poems this one most clearly lays out his aesthetic. Aesthetic = set of rules that govern an artist"s work or artistic beliefs. Coleman was a shy person who mostly expressed his beliefs through his poetry. Mono-perception - mimetic - causal/linear time frame- horizontal - product - external reality is important. Plural perception - postmodern - archaeological model - vertical - process - internal reality is important - expressive.
