Dramatic monologue: reveals a character, purpose of the genre. A study in character, and the character is different than the author. Words that help us talk about the author of a text, disentangle the voice of the author -- what is the author of the text, and who is the author. A poem in which an imagined speaker addresses a silent listener, not usually the reader: a lyric may also be addressed to someone, but is short, songlike and may appear to address either the reader/ poet. 3 readings of the author in a work: writer: historical person, historical existence who wrote the text. What we mean when we say the author. Persona: the mask, the apparent first person speaker of the poem, or the narrator of a work of fiction. The seer within the poem (can be the author)
