Document Summary

The wild duck is a part of the play but we don"t get to see it. Many characters in the play however, are compared to the wild duck; hjalmar, old ekdal, hedvig and gina (being placed in that household). The wild duck itself we never see but there is a symbolic hold in the play that different characters get mapped onto in the play. Most of the interpretation in the play comes from gregers, he is a very symbolic thinker. In act ii he talked about wanting to be like the hunting dog that saves the wild duck from drowning. Hedvig"s youth may be a sign of her impressionability or her imaginative openness. Unlike hedvig and gregers, characters like gregers" father and gina are very unimaginative and grounded in the now, they don"t read into situations or attach symbolic meaning to things. August strindberg born 1849 died 1912, he was younger than ibsen.
