ENGL 314 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Upper Middle Class
Document Summary
We should be thinking about what the characters reveal about themselves when they speak, most of what the characters in the play do is talk. A man called robert gives a reading of the play and sides with the prozorov family in thinking. Natasha is a devious woman, a villain in the play. His reading gives in to an emotional pull from the story to side with the main family. We often look for relatability in characters and so when we read a character"s trait or their actions, if we don"t relate or want to relate to it then we choose to dislike them. The prozorov family have an enormous amount of yearning, wishing and hoping. We realize that"s all there is in the play, they don"t make any actions towards fulfilling what they constantly complain about. Chekhov"s" plays were almost musical in a way, melodies and counter melodies, points and counterpoints.
