Trojans arrive in carthage to find carthaginians setting up a city almost like rome; Carthage is one of rome"s oldest enemies, enmity is begotten not be differences, but by likeness. Aeneas is in carthage because of june c. s. lewis viewed aeneas as a symbol of male development, but the main impediments in his journey are female. Describe what holds aeneas back women seen as impeding men from doing great things, specifically women as objects of love/lust. Love gives momentary pleasure, but the epic genre is oriented towards the future, the long-term. Aeneas" stay in carthage delays his quest, and while in carthage, he goes back in time with flashbacks, inverting the temporality (story goes backwards, aeneas wants to go forwards) Vergil can show how a subconsciously wants to go back to the old ways, even though he knows he has to go forward.
