Lecture 12 13/12/2016: the good woman/person of setzuan. Cloud 9 is not a political play while the mother is a very political play. Desire/goodness/dual personality: an aspect that is not studied enough in the good person of setzuan is desire, the main element comes from the main character falls in love. Brecht did not want to make the characters of shen te and shui ta as perfect opposites. Instead it was more like the ying/yang symbol semiotic. Immediate and impulsive definition of goodness: shen te gives away everything that she has: shen te almost immediately comes up with this alter ego persona in order to do things that she is not capable of doing herself. Everything that shui ta does in this play is for the sake of shen te. The goal is to put a barrier between the two characters. Are women softer and sweeter than men: denaturalize the character all together.
