Franco made sure to make lasting symbols to legitimize the national regime, such as the valley of the fallen in madrid, basilica built inside a mountain, built as a monument to the dead. It was built by political prisoners in the 40s, and in addition there are statues of franco and other generals in the army, they spanned all of spain, all cities and towns had one. The streets and squares were renamed, after generals, battles, political figures and has lasted almost up to this day, early 2000 there was an attempt at dismantling the vestiges of this. The creation of a national cinema to portray values of regime and portray history of the regime, primarily based on old castille and the olden days, ex. the film raza. But also history books in schools and universities offer a simplified version of spain"s history, one with a sense of mission linked to the spreading of catholicism and fights against enemies.
