Brought on an enormous loss of material as well as people. 1865: lee surrenders after enormous devastation and loss on april 2nd (war ends, lincoln assassinated by john wilkes booth april 14th, andrew johnson becomes president, last confederate army surrenders in june, 13th amendment abolishing slavery ratified in december. Numbers on top of numbers: shell-shocked of how many people had died, wanted to quantify the deaths: harvest of death . 50,000: average of 504 dead per day, contested , in 1865 americans had no clue how many people had died, didn"t have these solutions. Only 50% identified = wrong way to die: bridged divide between battles and homes, diseases travelled rapidly. Because of the latrines and close quarters diseases were spread quickly: mourning and burial rituals interrupted. Some soldiers died in semi-clean wards, if lucky a volunteer nurse would read the bible, and if she could write, maybe send a letter back home to family.
