Democrats, in disarray, nominate jimmy carter: poliical outsider, personal character, small town roots peanut farmer, of the people, religious faith, evangelical southern roots, support for labour unions / social welfare. Lowest voter turnout since end of ww2: 54: relecion that people were sick of naional afairs and did not trust the government, poliical landscape was realigning.
