WHAT IS A NEW CITY
a new urban mega development built on a greenfield site, intended to be self sufficient and
aiming to attract industry, businesses, and residential areas. It is not a commuter suburb.
it’s a very global phenomenon, really spread.
most of them are in the global south
NEW CITIES: DRIVER
- strategy to address urban problems such as pollution, congestion, sprawl, housing deficits
- national/regional strategies to “leap frog” economies from production of raw materials to a
knowledge economy
- employment and job creation strategy
- nation-building, crafting identity, re-branding the national image
NEW CITIES TRENDS:
a global south phenomenon, the budgets are very high
highlights the growing role of the private sector
new public/private partnerships
growing corporatization of urban space
new cities have CEOs, not elected mayor, city councils…it’s a corporate model
they’re vert elitist
they attract the upper-middle class
some are able to keep people they don’t want out, there are gated cities (no affordable housing…)
same configurations of power as the colonial era.
the cities are used by new elite to build identity
how are politics and culture intertwined?
how are new cities challenged, resisted, and reinterpreted by citizens?
(watch slide)
NEW CITIES, THE STORIES THEY TELL AND THE QUESTIONS THEY ASK
- How are new cities used by the ruling elite to construct national identity?
- What can we learn about political regimes by analyzing the cities they build?
- New cities draw attention and resources to and away from what?
