Newsome was arrested for "defacing monuments on state capital ground”

interpret the meaning of the conflict and the confederacy itself.
WHAT’S IN A NAME
- Civil war: this term is the most common name in the north
idea that it was a war within a single nation
the attempted succession was in fact illegitimate
the term was the most common term used during the years of the conflict (1861-1865) but it was
not universal
- war for the Preservation of the Union
this term is often found in memorials in the North
it’s similar in meaning to civil war, it emphasizes the confederacy
- War Between the States
the idea of this term in contrast to civil war is the idea that the states were separate and distinct
distinct political entities/distinct nations
it was a war between nations, not within one nation
idea that the south was distinctive from the North
the term was used at the time of the War
it became the preferred name of the war in the South in the post war era.
