Lecture 15 – food loss and food waste: connecting the dots toward food security
• Loss vs waste
o Different definitions and meanings
o Loss -> the food that is still edible for human consumption but we loose it at the
start of the consumption cycle
o Waste -> it gets loss later on in the consumption cycle
• Despite progress, any people remain hungry
o Prevalence of hunger declined from 19% to 11% BUT 795 million remain hungry
globally
▪ The conflicts in the middle east result in increasing number of
undernourished people
• The statistics are alarming
o 2 billion people over weight and obese
o 9.6 billion people in 2050
o 1.3 billion tonnes of food lost annually
o 1.7 million deaths fro limited FFV intake
o 1.4 billion people living on less than a dollar a day
o 1.5 billion people dependant on degrading and to live – IMPORTANT
• Responsibility – for what?
o Providing consumers with food that is safe, affordable, and of the quality and
diversity they expect
• The paradox
• World food situation
o Increase in population
o Failing seasonal rains and shifting weather patterns
o Changing landscape
o Loss of land, water, and air quality – environmental degradation
o Huge food losses and wastes

o The 17 sustainable development goals in 2015
o Multi-stakeholder ollaoratio etee usiess/uiersities, NGO’s.
government, the UN and communities is essential
• Universal Declaration of Human Rights

o Ensure the availability of food is to minimise the food losses rather than
producing more food
• How much are we loosing/wasting?
o 1/3 of food produced for human production
o 27$ billion in Canada annually
