Europe has used welfare policies (pension, employment insurance, health care, child care, etc. ) to undo inequality and class divisions, secure quality of life. Welfare system de-commodifies labour and establishes social citizenship: switches individuals dependence from market. Capitalist societies and poverty: dealing with poverty in a new way, i a capitalist society, new concept of poverty. Parliamentary democracies struggling with how to undo war damage and the inequalities and class divisions of europe. Focus on how generous or limited welfare state should be. People starting to think that people don"t need democracy in its liberal form. Idea that everything is for sale, including with labour: clashes with the idea that we are social citizens and have social rights, more than just working machines. De-commodification allows for a quality of life. Citizens carry social rights that are supposed to supersede class and work. People need to be less tied to the market economy.
