Institutionalism provides a bridge realism and liberalism: you can look at realist behaviour but also predict. Some realists began to think that even within the context of global- system anarchy, cooperation was possible. Examples: the united nations, the world trade organization, the. International regimes can also exist between a smaller group of states, such as free-trade agreements or economic communities. Exist to regulate state behaviour and increase cooperation between states. Standards of behaviour defined in terms of rights and obligations (mearsheimer 1994) States comply-willingly- they are not forced to join no one will punish a state for leaving. Institutions promote cooperation by establishing a connection between an actor"s present behaviour and anticipated future benefits . The internal logic is that cooperation will increase avoiding war they increase interaction between states which decreases chances of cheating.
