Chapter 5: how to govern cities and principalities that, prior to being. Cities or provinces that are accustomed to being ruled by a prince are easy to take over once the ruling family has been destroyed. Chapter 15: concerning things for which men, and princes especially, are. Correct behaviour of the prince: practical over theoretical rule is. How men should live vs how men should actually live. A prince should not concern himself with living virtuously, but rather needed with acting so as to achieve the most practical benefit. Chapter 17: concerning cruelty: whether it is better to be loved than to be. Compassion is admired (like generosity), but the prince has to be careful to not show compassion unwisely (ie: too compassionate and does not punish adequately and vice versa) A prince should be both loves and feared. Easy to break a bond of love when the situation arises (slaves), but the fear of punishment is always effective (prince)
