They simply established a pro-western transitional state and granted them independence as they did not need to govern the territory. Violence in palestine grows through interwar period, culminating in un partition (1947), israeli declaration of independence (1948), arab-israeli war. Britain promised to set up the jewish national home. Very many european jewish immigrants moved to palestine fleeing persecution from europe. They palestinians aren"t necessarily happy about this and there is conflict between the two groups.
