Sensory organs absorb energy from physical stimuli in the environment. Sensory receptors detect stimulus energies and concert them into neural impulses, which are sent to the brain. The brain organizes this input and translates it into something meaningful. * when we are an infant, there is sensation without perception because brain cannot form organizations. * or when we have never experienced something before ( clean slate ) Brain can interpret the ambiguous cues two different ways (paradigms & paradigms shift) Activation of a particular receptor requires presence of speci c type of energy. Different sensory modalities exist because signals received by the sense organs stimulate different nerve pathways leading to different areas of the brain. A condition in which stimulation of one sense also evokes another. Receptors change energy into form that can be used by nervous system. Continued presentation of same stimulus results in loss of sensitivity to that stimulus.
