Document Summary

Psyc 212 lecture 16 march 20th. Melody: melody: a sequence of notes or chords perceived as a single coherent structure. Melodies (cid:272)a(cid:374) (cid:271)e defined by their contours: the pattern of rises and declines in pitch, rather than by an exact sequence of sound frequencies. Melodies can change octaves or keys and still be the same melody even if they have completely different notes. Music and the brain: music is mostly processed in the right auditory cortex (inside the lateral sulcus). In the control condition (blue notes), a note was played repeatedly. In the experimental condition, there was a simple melody patterns of rises and falls in pitch. They looked at how the brain processed these different conditions. Fixed-pitch sequence versus silence: they saw that there was activity in the primary auditory cortex. Changing-pitch sequence (simple melody) versus fixed-pitch sequence: they saw activity in the right hemisphere, just outside the primary auditory cortex.
