Document Summary
Nonselective pathway= contributes information about the distribution of features across a scene as well as information about the gist of the scene. This pathway does not pass through the bottleneck of attention. Perception is extremely fast most scenes have be perceived within 50 ms. Natural vs urban scenes can be distinguished within 19ms. Takes 20-50 ms to recognize one simple object. Computes ensemble statistics= the average distribution or properties eg. orientation/color, over a set of objects or a region in a scene. Computers the scene gist and layout quickly spatial layout= description of the structure of a scene eg. enclosed/open/smooth, without reference to the identity of specific objects in the scene. Through dimensions, our visual system can categorize visual scenes efficiently as many naturally group together on a series of dimensions eg. openness (which is defined through the ratio of open vs non open lines) Just from orientation and basic freq, we can easily recognize scenes.
