Document Summary
Emotions part 2 (don"t have to read emotions & social relationships, emotions & social cognition) From last class: at least to some extent, emotions are recognisable across different cultures and there might even be some similarities amongst primates, hence, suggests that emotional expressions are universal and may be evolutionarily evolved behaviours. But that doesn"t mean they"re identical across all cultures. Highly stylised, culturally specific ways of expressing particular emotions (elfenbein & Ambady, 2002: more in addition" to prototypical displays, rather than replacements of prototypical displays - another way of doing it. [study] tracy & matsumoto, 2008: frequency and intensity of emotion may differ across cultures, people in westernised or american cultures may feel embarrassed or express shame, it may be less than how it would be in interdependent culture. Argues that emotions that are in line with, or promote, cultural ideals are more valued and hence, more prominent.
