Neuroanatomy and Brian Function
- How function relates to anatomy
- Francis Gall and Phrenology (1800s)
Birth of Neuropsychology
- Pierre Paul Broca- Paris 1861
- A physician who encountered a patient who had had a stroke and was unable to speak.
Naed hi patiet Ta
o Patient only says the ord Ta
- Performed autopsy, found damage to a specific area in LEFT frontal lobe
o Broa’s area
- The first substantial proof that damage to a specific area of the brain causes specific
deficit-> functional localization
- The field took off from this point.
Anatomical Investigations
- At the same time as studying patients with brain damage, scientists were improving
methods for studying the structure of the brain
o The ability to fixate tissue and view it under the microscope in mid- 19th century
o Followed by Cajal’s iproeet of Golgi stai ethod
The Brodmann map
- Korbnian Broadmann, 1909
- The most famous anatomical map of the human brain, still used in research today
- Mapped the entire cerebral cortex based on cell organization, or cytoarchitecture->
brodmann areas
o Cyto: cell architecture: structure
- Mapped brains of other species of mammals
Understanding human brain
- Much of our understanding of the human brain has come from studying natural brain
lesions (stroke, epilepsy, damage)
o Dr. Penfield is the pioneer in human brain research
- Brenda Milner
o Most famous living neuropsychologist
o Was a student of Hebb at McGill
o “tudied Dr. Pefield’s patiet
o Studied patient H.M. -> provided some of the most important discoveries of how
the brain works
Severe epilepsy starting at a young age
