Document Summary

It is even sometimes referred to as its own lobe. For many years we didn"t understand it. It is found within the sylvian fissure so you can"t see it from the lateral view. It is hidden by the frontal, parietal, and temporal opercula. Now we believe it has a large motor region in front o it"s central sulcus (anterior), and a somatosensory region behind (posterior). Penfield didn"t stimulate within the parietal operculum or the insula but we now know that there are several somatosensory regions here. The insula has 3 short gyri gyri brevi motor cortex. The insula also has 2 long gyri somatosensory control. Below, hidden inside the sylvian fissure, we also have. Hessl"s gyrus, where the primary auditory cortex lies. It sits on a transverse gyrus within the sylvian fissure. Anterior commissure: allows for communication between the temporal lobes. Fornix: major pathway joining the hippocampal system to other parts of the brain.
