Health Services use
When do people seek medical care?
When people experience unknown symptoms
Painful
Visible
Effect valued parts of the body
Misuse of health services
Overload most commonly due to people seeking medical help for
psychological issues mainly anxiety and depression
1) Not enough accessibility of psychological services (doctor=free and easy)
Only realistic way of getting counseling is through private insurance
So people go to doctors and get prescribed medication
2) People do realistically feel physical symptoms (somaticize)
Worried well and somaticizers
Type of people overly concerned about physical and mental health
Use health services more
Type of people whose mental problems show up as physical symptoms and
they are convinced that they are phsycially ill
Possible explanations:
Stigma about mental illnesssome people find it more legitimate to have
physical illness than mental
Being physically sick leads to secondary gains (social support and care)
Issue=secondary gains can interfere with return to good health (its easier
when you’re being taken care of and getting support)
Delaying medical care
Appraisal delay: time it takes an individual to decide if a syptom is serious
Illness delay: time between recognition of symptoms and deciding to seek
treatment or not
Behavioural delay: time between deciding ot seek treatment and doing so
Medical delay: time between making an appointment and receiving
appropriate medical care
Facotrs related to delaying:
Appraisal delay: wait less if painful and knowledge of symptoms
Illness: wait less if new
Behavioural: wait less if you believe it can be cured (efficacy belief)
Hospitals
Illness spreads and can be a problem especially for older people
Changing: now they only have private rooms to minimize spread of disease
But: patients may feel lonely and isolated (lack of
social/emotional/instrumental support)
Hospitalization decreased in past decades
More out patients, day surgery (for non-serious surgeries)
