Gives him a heightened sense of control over other aspects of his life. His relationship to his children: continue doing everything they did before, all the activities, and his personal case if he was not able to raise his children that would make a huge difference for him. Identifying an aspect in life that is particularly meaningful and helps them cope sounds like it is adaptive. He is successfully managing the adaptation to his disease and things he mentioned gives us a clue to adaptive processes. Chronic conditions range from mild to life threatening.
