In developmental psychopathology, it is the organization of behavioural and emotional dysfunction into meaningful groupings: major nosological framework in developmental psychopathology: Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (dsm) 5. Disorders are viewed to be discrete categories. They get experts into a room and they make decisions on what the categories should be. Discrete disorders with separate causes: categorical vs. dimensional approaches to psychopathology, categorical approach. Sit with all of the information that is being thrown at you and not panic. Gives us all a common language to work with: disadvantages. Children often do not fit into categories. When someone meets criteria for more than one psychiatric disorder. Once they meet the criteria, there"s still a lot of variation. The symptoms present themselves differently among people. Current categories proving inadequate for genetic and neuroscience research. May not be the most valid groupings: dimensional approach, research domain criteria (rdoc) Rather than using diagnostic categories, move towards assessing key dimensions.
