Collectivity is an umbrella term any distinct grouping of individuals. Ethnic, national, political, etc (i. e. economic elite, jewish canadians, first. They do not necessarily define a sociological group. Aligned interests & goals as they are all focused on same outcome. Regular interactions, not just sharing some characteristic. Its a group because we consider it a group (i. e. friends sitcom: types of groups: Huge variety in size, form, composition, structure, etc. Useful distinction (charles h. cooley): primary vs. Idea that groups are important & fundamental parts of our lives/how we interact. Primary (expressive) groups: small, lasting/durable, close & emotional connections (i. e. close friends, family) Secondary (instrumental) groups: varying size, goal oriented, formalized. & pragmatic connections (i. e. office, class: core discussion network (peter marsden) Asks about who you talk about important matters to. Asks about people"s relationship with each other & with respondent. Asking a community about their primary group allows us to track change over time.
