Document Summary

Lecture plan: populations vs. samples, non-probability sampling: types, examples, probability sampling : conditions, types, examples, generalizability, sampling procedure. Purposive: we begin with specific perspectives in mind that we want to examine, then seek out research participants who cover that full range of perspectives. This can be used to be purposive in our data gathering- either to represent a broad range of perspectives, or to only include people who meet very narrow or specific criteria. Let"s say we want to study mental health. We start with our friends, we interview our friends about mental health, and then ask them to ask their other friends to participate in our research. Quota: used in both quantitative and qualitative studies. Then, create sub groups of people, opinions that you will seek out. Because some voices tend to be marginalized (race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, cultures etc), certain voices are under represented. With quota we aim for equal representation in our research.
