Lived between 1689-1755: beginning of the 18th century. Very particular time (which he will get into later) Family which supported the man who became henry the fourth of france: was protestant (henry) Famously said, (cid:862)pa(cid:396)is is (cid:449)o(cid:396)th a (cid:373)ass(cid:863) (cid:449)he(cid:374) he (cid:271)e(cid:272)a(cid:373)e ki(cid:374)g. Became a convert to catholicism in order to be king. He 1715, he married a calvanist: calvanist = France had been torn in the previous century by religious wars. He was aware in his private life of religious difference. He came from a particular part of the aristocracy: noblesse de robe. Slightly less of a nobility, the bureaucratic nobility: he has a strong presence in bourdeau. He had local loyalties to areas that had its own parliament, its own self-government. This mattered to him quite a lot: he knows about it and is deeply interested in it. In his early years in bourdeau, there are a couple things to notice.
