ANTHROP 1AB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cultural Anthropology, Biological Anthropology, Qualitative Property
Document Summary
Fieldwork = immersion within a particular society. Archaeologists and paleoanthropologists excavate in the field. A physical anthropologist interested in the relationship between globalization and nutrition and growth will live within a community that exemplifies this relationship. A primatologist may live among a group of chimpanzees or baboons. A linguist may study the language of a particular culture by living among them. A cultural anthropologist will draft an ethnography through living within the community they wish to understand. So, regardless of which sub-discipline of anthropology you do, fieldwork involves: Long-term research (at least one year) - excavation methods in archaeology and physical; human interactions for cultural linguistics. Use both qualitative data (interviews, participant observation) and quantitative data. Participant observation: hang out intensively with a group of people, observe how they interact. Interviews -- often several hours long and you may re-interview someone. Targeted toward understanding someone"s detailed personal experiences toward something. Statistics that are generated from surveys, etc.
