The study of past societies & their cultures using material remains (ie. tools, ceramics, sites: includes tools, pottery, hearths, enclosures, & remains. The arrangement of these traces as well as the traces themselves re ect speci c human ideas & behaviour. While archaeologist use material remains, in many cases they use this in conjunction with other kinds of data (ie. written materials: ie. geographical & geological science research. Pop culture images of archaeology: based more in myth than actual reality, myth: they only seek lost treasure . They look for contextual objects: myth: they"re looters. They don"t get to keep what they nd - it goes to universities, museums, etc: myth: they work alone. They actually work in large interdisciplinary teams: romanticized. Three areas of archaeology: historical: the archaeological study of places for which written records exist.
