ANTHROP 2R03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Exogamy, Zande People
Document Summary
Share a similar complex of beliefs as the azande, but are distinctly different. Widely dispersed villages of a 100 people. Conflict between villages was endemic to society: each village was formerly fortified with a war making party. British came in and imposed the british peace, which is a set of laws and value to adopt. They were not allowed to partake in warfare and were instructed to give up witchcraft. They believed themselves to be menaced by both witchcraft and sorcery: for the azande, sorcery was not an issue, for the azande, is an inconvenience, for the amba, witchcraft is a terror. They kill just to satisfy their craving for human flesh: for the amba, sorcery is antisocial behavior. Sorcery is used to gain something, therefore they understand it. For the amba, no one actually does witchcraft objectively. Unlike the azande, the amba have no techniques or specialists to deal with witchcraft.
