Illness-disease model arises in response to patient dissatisfaction with care. Issues were raised when physicians would treat disease from the biomedical model (still being used) Definition of illness: how the sick person and the members of (cid:1) the family or wider social networks perceive, live with and respond to symptoms and disability and money is spent, and how much profit is made. Illness (social phenomena) is created: how we perceive and monitor our bodies, how we categorize and label symptoms when we are ill. Illness problems refer to the difficulties that symptoms create in our lives: highly subjective experience that is difficult to legitimize. The language of complaints can occur in both verbal as well as nonverbal communication: these are learned behaviours in society. Stages of illness experience (may not account for drug (cid:1) addictions, etc) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) It also depends on spirituality, as well as social and cultural. This is why patients respond differently (belief system)
